What is Argan Oil?

Argan Oil is made from the fruits of the Argan tree which only grows in Morocco.  The fruit of the argan oil resembles the shape and color of an olive.  The outside shell is somewhat soft and encapsules a harder shell inside.  The core of the fruit is a light- colored seed which the source of argan oil.

How is Argan Oil produced?

Once the Argan fruit is harvested from the tree, the soft shell is removed. The harder inside shell is then cracked open which exposes the seed, often called almond due to its resemblance to an almond.

Argan Press

Grinding / Pressing of Argan nuts.

Traditionally, argan oil was produced by crushing the shell and extracting the oil by hand. The kernels are crushed in a granite hand press by rotating the top of the press which crushes the kernels and squeezes out a paste.  From this paste, the oil is then extracted.

Nowadays, the oil is extracted from the argan fruit mechanically by machinery. This process has advantages over the hand-press method: it allows for more hygienic processing conditions and thus eliminates contamination by dust, dirt and other environmental influences. The traditional method also involves mixing the argan paste with water to separate the oil from the paste; this could be a breeding ground for micro-organism that like moist environments. Machine-pressed oil, in contrast, simply undergoes a mechanical filtering process that does not require any filter medium such as water or solvents to finish the product.

No fragrances, preservatives, or alcohol are added to the oil.  What goes into the Kandala bottle is 100% argan oil only, nothing else.  We use an amber bottle which protects the oil from UV exposure and preserves its maximum potency.

Properties of argan oil

Essential Fatty Acids:
Omega 6 (Linoleic acid) and Omega 9 (Oleic acid) are building compounds that the body cannot produce itself.  They are essential for the body to build and repair cell membranes; they have water-binding and moisturizing properties and regulate the skin’s hydration.  Linoleic acid, in particular, is also said to be anti-inflammatory.
Prostaglandin is a natural anti-inflammatory and affects cell growth and development.
Palmitoleic acid
Stearidonic acid (Omega 3)
Linolenic acid (Omega 3) has anti-inflammatory properties.
Myristic acid helps good absorption through the skin.
Ferulic acids help prevent damage caused by UV light.
(Phyto)Sterols halt the decline of the body’s collagen production (the main building block of the skin).  According to the National Institute of Health, phytosterols actually encourage the body to produce more collagen.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol) and Carotenoids are said to fight free radicals that could reduce the skin’s aging process.
Polyphenols have anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic and anti-aging properties.
